I was chatting with a small business owner recently who was absolutely killing it on social media. Instagram on lockdown, engaged followers, the lot. But TikTok? They couldn’t crack it. I don’t blame them. Replicating your efforts across every new platform is exhausting, and we both joked about how much the business terrain has changed in ten years.

As a millennial, I remember when MySpace was the haven for every budding music entrepreneur. When every serious writer swore by Tumblr. Since then we’ve had Snap, Facebook’s endless reinventions, and COVID handed us TikTok. Each one brings a new way to communicate and a new algorithm to learn.

And sometimes, great content gets stranded on a deserted island. Where is Vine now?

Here’s my point. Whatever you do, whether you’re a creator, a service provider or a tradesperson, you still need a website in 2026. Platforms come and go. Algorithms change overnight. Your website is the one piece of the internet you actually own. Stay with me and I’ll explain why.

You own it. That is the whole point.

When you post on Instagram, you are building on rented land. The followers, the content, the reach, none of it is truly yours. Instagram lends it to you, and it can change the rules whenever it likes. Reach gets throttled. Accounts get suspended by mistake. A whole platform can vanish, and Vine proved that.

A website is different. You own the domain, the content, the design, all of it. Nobody can switch it off, bury it in an algorithm change or hold it hostage behind a monthly subscription. Build it once, and it is yours for good.

Google is where people actually look for you

Here is something social media cannot do well. When someone in Leicester searches “plumber near me” or “best cafe in the city centre”, they are not scrolling Instagram. They are on Google, ready to spend money right now.

If you do not have a website, you simply do not show up. Your competitor does, even if their work is not as good as yours. That is the quiet frustration a lot of business owners feel: watching someone with a worse product win the customer, purely because they were easier to find.

A website, set up properly, is how you get found at the exact moment someone is looking to buy.

It makes you look like the real deal

Be honest. When you are about to spend money with a business you have never used, what do you do? You look them up. No website, or a scrappy free one covered in someone else’s branding, plants a seed of doubt.

A proper website says you are serious, established and here to stay. It is often the difference between someone choosing you and quietly going with the safer looking option.

“But I get all my business from social media”

Great. Genuinely. If Instagram is working for you, keep going.

But ask yourself one question. What happens if that account disappears tomorrow? A hack, a wrongful ban, a change to the algorithm that halves your reach overnight. If your entire business lives on a platform you do not own, you are one bad day away from starting over.

A website is the insurance policy. It is the home base that everything else points back to. Social media brings people in. Your website is where they land, and where they become customers.

The bottom line

Platforms will keep coming and going. There will be a new TikTok, and one day people will ask “where is TikTok now?” the way we ask about Vine today.

Through all of it, your website stays. It is the one part of your online presence that you actually own, that works for you around the clock, and that nobody can take away.

Build it once. Own it for good.
